An enduring Eames design

The lithe chairs of the Eames Aluminium Group have been a popular design since their introduction in 1958, and it’s no wonder.

The graceful silhouette sits equally well in all kinds of home and workplace interiors.
A wide range of material options allows a personalised look that, with its distinctive form, provides a statement of enduring design excellence wherever they are placed.

Timeless Elegance

It’s uncanny how a chair designed in 1958 as outdoor seating still manages to look both classic and contemporary in twenty-first century interiors.
The chairs’ clean, trim lines make them appropriate for all kinds of places, from classic and contemporary homes to elegant offices to hip start-ups.

Aluminium Group chairs, upholstered in traditional fabric or leather, are ribbed at 48mm intervals for a clean, refined appearance.
The Cygnus mesh option gives the chairs a lighter-scaled, translucent quality.

Innovative Comfort

Charles and Ray Eames gave their design an innovative suspension that creates a firm, flexible “sitting pocket” that conforms subtly to the body’s shape. They created that suspension by stretching a continuous piece of seat-back upholstery tautly between lightweight aluminium side ribs.

Aluminium Group seat pads have layered construction with fabric or leather upholstery. Cygnus mesh is a self-contouring, flexing material available on Aluminium Group chairs to provide aeration, even weight distribution, and long-term comfort. Designed specifically for the Eames Aluminium Group, Cygnus is an elegant option.

Expanded Options

Give this timeless design a high degree of personalisation through expansive material choices. Among these is the luxurious feel of leather, in contract-grade or premium MCL Leather, a semi-aniline, dyed leather with 100 percent natural full grain. Colour variations and surface marks are an inherent characteristic of this material, which will acquire wrinkles and creases and develop a rich patina over time.

To complement lighter materials, we offer powder coat finishes on the base and frame, along with traditional polished aluminium. Chairs with the 4-star base come with glides that are easy on any floor covering, while chairs with a 5-star base have a choice of casters for bare floors or carpeting.

Durability

With one-piece, curved aluminium side ribs and die-cast aluminium base, the chair is strong, yet lightweight and easy to move.

Design Story

Aluminium Group chairs began as a challenge among legendary designers. Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard were designing the Columbus, Indiana, home of J. Irwin Miller, founder of Cummins Engines. They wanted a high-quality seating product for outdoor use and asked Charles and Ray Eames to develop one. The Eameses accepted.

Known for their honest use of materials, the Eameses constructed their chairs with cast aluminium and a seat frame meant to support a stretched synthetic mesh. The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell.

We began making the Aluminium Group chairs in 1958. In 1969, the Eameses extended the original design by adding plush, individually upholstered cushions. They named these the Soft Pad chairs. The chairs' simple lines, innovative use of materials, and suspension comfort have kept them among the most popular seating choices for both offices and homes for more than 50 years.
